— Several area students won awards during the recent Puyallup Spring Fair, held April 15-18. Caitlin Quesenberry of Sumner owned the FFA Grand Champion steer, which was purchased by Olson’s Meats of Enumclaw. Barbara Miller of Puyallup was the grand champion baker in the 6-10 age division. Christian Buchignani of Sumner won first place in the baking/yeast bread division for ages 11-15. Kelsey Pittsford of Puyallup was the grand champion in creative writing for the 6-10 age division. In the egg drop contest, Micah Seaton of Bonney Lake took first place, Peter Stuart of Puyallup took second place and Anna Seaton of Bonney Lake took third for the 6-10 age division, while Andrea Seaton and Joshua Seaton of Bonney Lake took second and third, respectively, in the 11-15 age division. Matthew Hopkins of Bonney Lake took first place in the Seattle Fudge Parent-Child Candy Contest for ages 6-10, while Keyan Harris of Bonney Lake was third in the same category. The textiles champion for ages 11-15 was MacKenna Krohn of Puyallup. The Junior Heifer Show saw Courtney Tribble of Puyallup take the reserve champion heifer, champion senior showman and champion owned and bred heifer awards.

— Air Force Airman Deanndra M. Casteele graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Casteele is a 2007 graduate of Emerald Ridge High School. She is the daughter-in-law of South Hill resident John Casteele.

— Bonney Lake resident Nicholas Trumble is one of 650 undergraduate and graduate students eligible to participate in commencement exercises on May 14 at Minot State University in North Dakota. Trumble will be earning his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
