Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region enjoyed a good turnout when it opened its new Blue Boutique store at 926 Main Street in downtown Sumner on Thursday, May 8.
The 2,000-square foot store includes Goodwill's top merchandise selected from household items donated across Pierce County. Products include designer apparel for women and men and home decor priced at 60 to 70 percent below retail.
From 5-7 p.m. on Friday, May 9, the public is invited to a Ladies Night special event. The program will feature light appetizers and beverages, make-up tips from a local stylist and prizes, including Blue Boutique gift cards.
The first 20 ladies through the door will receive swag bags, plus one woman will win a four-pack of tickets to a regional sporting event, limo ride to the game and four $50 gift cards to the boutique.
The store was completely financed by a private donation from Clara and Ottie Ladd and a $90,000 contribution from JPMorgan Chase & Company.
"Thanks to our new partners we look forward to expanding our support to the unemployed in this region," said Terry Hayes, president and CEO of Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region, which covers a 15-county region and helps annually about 9,000 unemployed.
Ottie Ladd, who passed away in 2013, was a big believer in giving back to the communities in which he did business. He offered many young people their first job during the time he owned 23 Kentucky Fried Chicken stores in Pierce County, Spokane and Coeur d'Alene.
After more than 30 years of ownership, Ottie sold his stores in 1993, said his wife, Clara.
"He loved to see young people blossom as they gained confidence and learned new job skills," Clara said. "And he fervently believed in Goodwill's mission — to help people develop the skills they need to find meaningful work. It's in that spirit and in his memory that I support Goodwill's mission through the opening of this boutique in Sumner."
Clara said her husband called giving back to the community "paying the rent."
"Rent is what you pay to live here to enjoy this beautiful country and this area," Clara added.
