Puyallup Vikings water polo player Amy Kiuchi was unstoppable in a rivalry match against the Emerald Ridge Jaguars.
Kiuchi scored a game-high six goals and the Vikings turned in an 18-2 victory against the Jaguars on April 30 at the Puyallup High School pool. Vikings’ head coach Todd Fletcher said it was one of the most complete games he’s seen his squad play during the 2014 season.
“We played really well tonight from start to finish. Often times that doesn’t happen. Even last week in our win against Rogers, they scored first,” Fletcher said. “We just played lights out tonight. Emerald Ridge has a really good goalie but it was just one of those nights where we were clicking on all cylinders. It was awesome to see.”
The Vikings outscored the Jaguars 17-0 in the first three quarters of the game. Emerald Ridge players Aspen Sellers and Elizabeth Schuster scored goals in the fourth quarter. Fletcher was impressed with Kiuchi’s play on the offensive end of the pool.
“Amy played really aggressive and really smart right off the bat. What a great game she had,” he said.
Emerald Ridge James McMullan said his youthful squad is working hard to improve.
“We have to make sure we center our emotions more. If you get emotional, you are going to take yourself out of the game,” McMullan said. “We need to focus on what we can fix and not what the other teams are doing. In the fourth quarter, we really started to hone in on that and scored a couple of goals. We’re a young team and we’re learning.”
