Making an impact on the soccer field

Boys soccer: Junior Jose Valentin patrols the midfield for undefeated Rams

Staff writerApril 16, 2014

The Rogers Rams boys soccer team is in first place in the South Puget Sound League South with an overall record of 5-0-3 halfway through the season.

Rogers junior Jose Valentin creates scoring opportunities on the offensive end and plays stingy defense from his position of midfielder.

Valentin, who picked up soccer as a 10-year-old after watching his brother compete in adult rec leagues, said he’s glad to see his team atop the standings for the first time in his high school career. Valentin has been on the varsity roster since his freshman season in 2012.

“We just have to play our game every time. We know that teams are going to try to come after us. We just got to keep working hard go out there and try to win the best we can,” Valentin said. “We’re known as a physical team but we want to be known for more than just being a physical team. I feel we can go really far. I have a really good feeling about this year.”

The Herald recently asked Valentin a few questions about his life away from the soccer field.

The Herald: What is your favorite movie of all time?

Jose Valentin: It would have to be “Forrest Gump.” The story behind it was really good.

TH: What is your biggest pet peeve?

JV: When people spell my name wrong. When people spell Jose with an “H” instead of a “J.”

TH: Who is your pick to win the NBA Finals this June?

JV: I don’t really watch basketball but I would say Miami. I heard they’re not doing so good right now, though.

TH: If you could pick one person to go to dinner with, who would it be?

JV: Ariana Grande. She is really attractive.

TH: What is something unique about you that nobody would know?

JV: When I was a little I got into a fight with a chicken. I just tried petting it and he came at me. I have a scar on my face from it.

TH: What is your favorite hobby away from the soccer field?

JV: Spending time with friends and family.

TH: Who are you listening to the most in your iPod right now?

JV: Right now I have been listening to Big Sean. It gets me pumped up before games.

TH: What is your favorite dinner dish?

JV: Lasagna. It is really good.

TH: What is your favorite TV show right now?

JV: “SportsCenter.”
