The Blissful Butterfly carries antique buttons and artisan jewelry

Corner store on Main Street and Kincaid Avenue aims to be unique destination

Kathryn Gard, owner of The Blissful Butterfly, hopes her store will be a destination spot for creative people who are looking for decorative buttons.

When Kathryn Gard was 17, she was designing clothes and jewelry for herself. For 18 years, the Bonney Lake resident owned and managed Blue Iris Beads in Kent. She opened a store on March 18 closer to home: The Blissful Butterfly in Sumner.

“I love Sumner,” Gard said. “Great shops. Great walkability. A great place to have a business.”

The Blissful Butterfly is located on the corner of Main Street and Kincaid Avenue at 1002 Main St. Inside, customers will find Gard’s original artisan jewelry, as well as four other jewelry lines. In addition, there are fiber and ribbon tassels sourced from Georgia, Naked Bee lotions and soaps from Tennessee, and accessories for beads, ribbons, card stock and speciality fibers.

Gard is most proud of her line of antique buttons, most of which are Victorian-style. They’re circa the late 1800s to early 1900s and sourced from the East Coast.

“I have collected antique buttons since 1989,” Gard said. “Some people collect them for closures on bracelets or necklaces. Some people may want a special button to put on what they knitted, or they may put it on a scrapbook page or clothing.”

Gard also sells a line of vintage glass buttons from west Germany, circa the 1930s.

“They’re totally fascinating,” she said. “Every button has a story behind it. What that story is, we don’t know. We just know they’ve been around for hundreds of years.”

Gard said she selects the most pristine to showcase.

“That makes (the buttons) all the more desirable,” she said.

Gard plans to add new buttons as she finds them. She wants her store to add to the unique downtown Sumner shopping experience.

“Uniqueness is what I’m looking for,” she said. “There is such a wonderful selection in Sumner.”
