Soccer players are in constant motion at any level of play.
Midfielders — those who must be involved with both offense and defense — burn more calories than any other player.
Rogers senior Evan Sowards loves playing the position. He’s been a mainstay in the Rams’ midfield since his freshman season in 2011.
“Everyone thinks soccer is a lot of running, but people underestimate how much of it you do,” Sowards said. “Whatever you’re doing on the soccer field, you’re always running. I like setting a good example for the younger guys on the team. I like being one of the older players, and I like taking the lead.”
The Herald recently asked Sowards a few questions about his life away from the soccer field.
The Herald: What is your favorite restaurant in Puyallup?
Evan Sowards: The Olive Garden. The breadsticks and salad are just awesome.
TH: What is your biggest pet peeve?
ES: When people don’t give 100-percent effort.
TH: Who is your pick to win the NBA championship?
ES: I don’t know that much about basketball, but I will say the Miami Heat.
TH: What is your favorite movie of all time?
ES: I would have to say “2012.” I thought it was fast-paced from the start. I like movies that are always going.
TH: What is your favorite show on TV right now?
ES: I love the show “Counting Cars.” I think it’s really crazy how they can transform a piece of junk into an amazing car.
TH: What is something unique about you that nobody would know?
ES: I enjoy studying the weather. I like learning about weather systems. If I’m bored or something, I will go watch the weather channel.
TH: Where is your dream vacation spot?
ES: I would like to go to Hawaii. I have never been there. My dad was stationed there in the military, and he told me all these cool stories about scuba diving there.
