The 21st annual Community Summit this month will highlight programs that exist to serve youth and families in Sumner and Bonney Lake.
The informational event will be held March 20 at Mountain View Middle School in Bonney Lake.
“This year we recognize the incredible collaboration between the communities and schools,” said Marilee Hill-Anderson, STARR Project director for the Sumner School District. “It’s a time to step back and give awareness to spotlight new events. We’d love our community to learn about how they can get involved.”
The Community Summit is an annual program presented by the Sumner/Bonney Lake Communities for Families Coalition and administered through the STARR Project. This year’s theme will be “Serve Big.”
Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about efforts such as the Big Give, holiday giving, back-to-school fairs and other school initiatives.
Thad Huff, pastor at Open Life, will be the keynote speaker. Huff is the visionary behind the annual Community Big Give, which hosted its third event last November and fed 1,800 people in Bonney Lake.
Huff helped to start a sister program in Sumner last November.
The Community Summit will start with pre-summit service projects from 3 to 4:45 p.m., followed by breakout sessions from 5 to 6 p.m. A complimentary dinner, the Community Impact/Unsung Hero Awards and Huff will follow. The event is expected to conclude about 8:15 p.m.
Financial and in-kind contributions come from the cities of Bonney Lake and Sumner, the Sumner School District, the Drug Free Communities Grant, Bonney Lake Lions Club, Miles Stone & Gravel, Lake Tapps Community Church, Mountain View Middle School, and other partners and volunteers.
“I am humbled and I am grateful for the selfless acts of service that are highlighted, both through our Unsung Hero Awards process and the ongoing work to serve children that are highlighted in our breakout groups,” Hill-Anderson said. “It’s not only a time for a call to action, but a time to step back and appreciate the communities we live in and work for, and the individuals that make our schools and communities such a great place to be.”
