Cascade Christian senior running back Jackie Wood is one of several players who garner a significant number of carries for the Cougars.
Wood, who scored two touchdowns on Oct. 19 against Cedar Park Christian, said his strength is running the football, but he’s much better in the passing game than the previous two seasons — and for good reason.
“This year, I figured out I needed contacts,” he said. “My vision before I had contacts was 20/60, and that had an effect on me catching the ball. This is my best season I’ve had receiving, and having contacts has helped a lot.”
Wood said he wants to see his team return to the Tacoma Dome for the Class 1A state semifinals and finals. The Cougars, who had made a habit of playing in the Final Four, missed out on the state playoffs last year.
“We have a good mentality as a team,” he said. “Everybody is at the same level and has a great attitude. Our tempo is upbeat, and that is a huge plus.”
The Herald recently asked Wood a few questions about his life away from football.
The Herald: What is your favorite movie of all time?
Jackie Wood: “Titanic.” I just like the scene where she is seeing Jack float to the bottom. It makes me cry every time.
TH: What is your biggest pet peeve?
JW: Someone talking the talk and not walking the walk.
TH: What is your favorite restaurant in Puyallup?
JW: Red Robin. Bottomless root beer floats and fries. That is the real deal right there.
TH: Who was your idol as you grew up?
JW: My dad. He played college football at Northern Arizona University and always has pushed me to be a better ballplayer, musician and singer.
TH: If you could pick one person to go to dinner with, who would it be?
TH: What is your favorite hobby away from football?
JW: Playing guitar and playing in a band. I’m in a rock band right now. We’re trying to write on our stuff and get on the radio, hopefully this next summer.
TH: What are you listening to the most in your iPod?
JW: Avenged Sevenfold (rock band).
