Emerald Ridge volleyball head coach Bobby McGivern knew the Beamer Titans would be a tough opponent despite their winless South Puget Sound League South Division record.
Beamer won the first game, but Emerald Ridge rebounded with wins in consecutive games for a 23-25, 25-19, 28-26, 25-13 victory Wednesday night at Emerald Ridge High School.
Emerald Ridge improved to 10-1 overall and remained in first place with a 5-0 league mark. Beamer dropped to 4-6, 0-5 in the SPSL.
“I have known (Beamer head coach) Pat Taitano for a long time,” McGivern said. “He is a club volleyball director. I know what kind of coach he is and knew what his team would bring. Despite their record, that is a great team. Any time you are playing against them, you know it’s going to be a tough match.
“We knew what we were getting into,” McGivern said. “We knew it was going to be a long night.”
Taitano said the third game was the turning point of the match.
“That was a very pivotal game and was so important,” he said. “Both of our teams put everything on the line. Whoever was going to win that was going to go up 2-1, and whoever lost that had some battles to go through.”
Emerald Ridge had a 25-24 lead and possession of the serve in the third game before disaster struck. The Jaguars were called for an illegal substitution, and it cost them a point and possession.
“We had messed up and didn’t sub correctly,” McGivern said. “That took a point away from us, and the momentum went their way. We just had to brush it off and move forward. The girls showed a lot that they could come back from that and win the set. It was a really exciting set.”
Emerald Ridge junior Isabella Zubrod had a game-high 38 assists. Team captains Jenna Mullen and Tristyn Smith had 12 kills apiece.
The Jaguars will host the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles on senior night this Thursday at Emerald Ridge High School.
“For us, it’s always one match at a time right now,” McGivern said. “We just have to focus on ourselves and go from there.”
