The Puyallup Vikings dominated the Bethel Braves from the opening whistle Thursday afternoon during a 6-0 victory at Art Crate Field in Spanaway.
Sophomores Saige Lyons and Jordyn Bartelson scored a pair of goals for Puyallup (1-0-1 overall), and Hannah Ornes and Jessica Udovich chipped in a goal apiece.
The combination of the heat, an inexperienced Bethel squad and a talented Puyallup lineup led to the lopsided score. Bethel (0-2) had just 13 players suit up for the game.
Puyallup head coach Matt White said his starters didn’t see much action.
“We brought up as many (junior varsity) kids as we could today and rotated as many players as we could,” White said. “The starters only played about 15 minutes each half. We played them just enough to work on the patterns we’ve been working on in practice.
“I’m happy to see the team is continuing to improve,” he added. “The kids are doing a great job trying to stay as focused as we can each day. We’re focused on today and what is in store for the future.”
White said he was impressed with Lyons and Bartelson, each of whom were playing in just their second varsity game.
“We graduated two of our strongest players from last year (Justine Ibarra, Ashley Homer), and we’re very blessed to bring in two sophomores this year who do different things on the field but are just as good,” White said. “That is not the worst position to be in. They both are really nice kids who are working hard.”
