Downpour forecast to start Thursday

Heavy rain could fall in the Tacoma area and elsewhere throughout Western Washington on Thursday and Friday, the National Weather Service said Tuesday.

It’s difficult to predict when and where the storms will happen, meteorologists said, and they can descend quickly. The Weather Service issued a special weather statement Tuesday, advising residents to pay close attention to the forecast.

Showers and thunderstorms could drift across the region with a low pressure system expected to come from the north Oregon coast.

Some of the storms could bring more than an inch of rain in less than an hour, according the Weather Service.

Heavy rains can overwhelm storm drains and cause urban flooding, the statement said, which happened in Tacoma and elsewhere around the region Thursday.
