The Sunrisers Kiwanis Club of South Hill and the Puyallup Kiwanis Club have a solution for people who want to avoid the hassle of parking at the Washington State Fair.
The clubs work together to provide a fair shuttle as a fundraiser, said Gail Clowers, president-elect of the Puyallup Kiwanis Club.
“This is also a great service for folks wanting to attend the fair and avoid the big crowds at the parking lots,” Clowers said.
The participating clubs from Puyallup, Buckley and Bonney Lake operate three shuttle sites, Clowers said. One is from the Goodwill parking lot on 4th Street and River Road; another is from the Sears parking lot at the South Hill Mall, and the third is at the Best Western Hotel parking lot on South Hill.
Clowers said the clubs have operated the Best Western location for the past 20 years. It operates every day of the fair and begins at 8 a.m. The additional sites operate Friday, Saturday and Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
Riders are delivered and picked up at the Green Gate and will catch a bus there to return to their cars, Clowers said.
“We will be operating the shuttles until a half-hour after the (grandstand) shows in the evenings,” Clowers added.
Parking is free, but the clubs suggest a $5 donation for adults and $2 for children to help offset the cost, Clowers said.
“Different clubs have volunteers that do the driving and hosting the site,” Clowers said. “It is a great way to get to the fair and a great way for folks to support the work of the Kiwanis clubs. Those who use this service swear that it is the best-kept secret in town.”
Clowers said the fair board of directors enjoys its partnership with the Kiwanis clubs. Elks Club volunteers help to expand the program to the River Road and Sears parking lots.
Proceeds support youth programs Kiwanis sponsors. For more information, visit www.thefair.com/plan-your-trip/transportation.Reporter Andrew Fickes can be reached at 253-552-7001 or by email at email@example.com. Follow him on Twitter, @herald_andrew.
