For the second consecutive year, five players combined to win the 20th annual Viking/Ram golf tournament.
Jay Looker, Mark Looker, Rick Kerhn, Dan Daniels and Larry Hurley placed first Aug. 3 at the High Cedars Golf Course in Orting. They won for the fourth time in the past five years.
Clayton Sparks, one of the tournament organizers, wasn’t surprised to see them repeat in the field of nearly 90 golfers.
“They seem to play very well together,” Sparks said. “I looked in the book and saw they have won many of our past tournaments.”
All proceeds will benefit the Nick Engels Viking-Ram golf tournament scholarship. Kelsey Larson of Rogers High School and Devin Carriveau of Puyallup High were the recipients this year. Larson will attend Gonzaga University in Spokane this fall, and Carriveau will go to Western Washington University in Bellingham.
Sparks said there has been a dramatic increase in golfers since 2000.
“Right before the seventh annual tourney, it was switched to High Cedars from Lipoma Firs,” Sparks said. “The biggest change is that it went from groups of four golfers per team to five golfers per team. That made a big difference.”
Sparks said the special part of the isn’t about the results.
“Seeing all of the alumni come together is great,” he said. “The camaraderie of the event is something I know everyone associated with the tournament enjoys. We have a mix of everybody, and it’s not only just Puyallup and Rogers alumni. In 2006, former Seattle Mariners player Mike Blowers played, and his team won the tournament.”
