Sumner’s Taylor Radniecki is used to making adjustments and barking out signals for his fellow offensive linemen.
Radniecki, who will be in his third year as the team’s starting center this fall, approaches football in a cerebral manner.
“I call the huddles and make sure everyone is lined up right and knows their assignments,” he said. “My main job is to deal with the other team’s nose guards and help my teammates out as much as I can.”
Radniecki said it’s fun to block for running backs Brandon Tuilaepa and DeJon Lynch.
“Once they get past you, then you know they are going to have a good run,” Radniecki said “As an offensive lineman, it’s our job to make sure our running backs get across the line of scrimmage without being touched.”
Radniecki isn’t the biggest center — he’s just 5-foot-9 and 215 pounds — but that doesn’t stop him from doing his job efficiently.
“If the guys I go against are really tall, it just makes it easier for me to get under them and get my block,” he said. “If we give (running backs) huge holes, then they can see what is happening and rattle off long runs.”
Sumner finished 9-3 last year won the South Puget Sound League 2A championship. Radniecki said his team is determined to defend its title.
“After last year’s league championship, we have high expectations to live up to,” he said. “We want to do it again.”
