Editorial: John Doan is leaving Sumner a strong city

Published: January 20th, 2010 06:00 AM

John Doan has spent most of his post-college days in Sumner in one form or another.

After this week, Doan will be spending his days in Tumwater, where he takes over as that city’s new administrator.

Doan brought humor and joy into the multiple roles he had in Sumner. He started as a land use planner and took a step to part-time as the parks and facilities manager so he could strengthen his skill set.

After completing a degree in not-for-profit leadership, in addition to the Bachelor of science and Master in civil engineering he already held, he assumed deputy city administrator responsibilities in Sumner.

It wasn’t until 2005 that he became the city administrator for Sumner, a position that put him in the perfect spot to have the greatest impact on the city.

He leaves the town in better shape than he found it and we will miss his leadership.
