Letters to the editor

Published: January 13th, 2010 06:00 AM

The following are letters to the editor that appeared in the Jan. 13 print edition of The Herald. To submit a letter, e-mail editor@puyallupherald.com. Please keep letters submissions to 250 words.

District 1’s newest council representative should be neutral or similar to George Dill

I have been politically active in Puyallup since I helped George Dill on his first campaign. What I have found is a group of people who do not accept council members who represent anybody but them.

Mr. Dill, Mr. Hansen and Mr. Knutsen represented all of us and have been constantly attacked for their views. Tony Aho attacked Mr. Dill and Mr. Knutsen in a letter to the editor in The Herald.

District 1 deserves a council person who can serve all of the district, not just part. The council needs to replace Mr. Dill with a similar representative or a neutral. Tony Aho’s views clearly oppose Mr. Dill and

Mr. Knutsen and will add to the turmoil. Turner, Malloy and Brouillet need to think of us and not who controls the city manager.

Gene Landry, Puyallup

Tony Aho is the right mix of Puyallup’s long-seeded integrity and a fresh perspective

I grew up in Puyallup and I am proud to say that to others. After a few years in North Tacoma, I recently moved back to P-town, and I take comfort in the traditions and overall character of the city. A few days ago, I drove through downtown and noticed new artwork. Statues. Variety!

My point is that Puyallup needs to retain its strong foundation of a safe, family-oriented community, but it needs to adapt and change. Puyallup needs that all-too-common word: Diversity.

Tony Aho is without a doubt the right mix of Puyallup integrity and fresh perspective. He campaigned relentlessly for a council spot and earned it, short of a mere 184 votes. He didn’t mosey about his own neighborhood ringing doorbells, he stood in the rain with his family and treated everyone with respect and kindness. He is well-educated, has a strong moral code and has Puyallup’s best interest at heart.

The passing of George Dill is a sad and bizarre twist in this election but for the council to hand the spot to one of their cronies is nepotism. Why don’t you just find a person at a bus stop and give them the council seat? Randomly handing the spot to one of your buddies is disgusting. Tony Aho worked for the seat, and was voted in shy of 184 votes. Let’s not forget the number of Puyallupians who want him as their council representative.

Erin Williams, Puyallup

People should think twice before allowing the development of Bonney Lake’s forest

I feel that the people of Bonney Lake had better think twice or more before jumping into development of the WSU Forest land.

First of all, we have enough people around here now. The roads can’t handle the traffic we have today and there is nothing being said about road improvements.

If people are not familiar with what developers do to forest land today, drive out the Crater Road to Cascadia and you will see a miscarriage of development if there ever was one.

The residents of Bonney Lake deserve better. Don’t let this happen.

Jack Kelly, Sumner
