A smash mouth rushing attack unveiled by the Cascade Christian Cougars took the fight out of the Toledo Indians.
The Cougars relied heavily upon its offensive line, grinding out a 49-14 win in the first round of the Class 1A football playoffs on Nov. 14 at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. The Cougars rushed for 351 yards as a team, scoring six rushing touchdowns against the Indians. Tyler Walrath scored three touchdowns on the ground and David Walters, Brendan Ossman and Colton Faverty scored a touchdown apiece the hosses up front as well. Cougars quarterback Kyle Stennes hit Cody Creech on a 36-yard touchdown pass in the third period, rounding out the scoring parade.
The Cougars will face the Montesano Bulldogs in the second round of the Class 1A state playoffs on Nov. 21 in Tumwater.
Walrath enjoyed the fruit of his lineman’s labor.
“They played absolutely phenomenal,” Walrath said of the hosses up front. “The holes were so crisp and easy to run through. All of the credit goes to them.”
The Cougars didn’t pass the ball much against the Indians considering Stennes through just one touchdown pass on the evening.
“We ran the ball more than we normally do. It was working so well,” Davis said. “Kyle threw some good passes. We will work more on our passing game at practice this week.”
Cougars senior offensive lineman Jonathan Felczak didn’t expect the Cougars to blow out the Indians the way they did.
“Every game we play we know it’s going to be a battle. The coaches always tell us to play our game and we will be fine. We were challenged tonight and we responded with big plays,” Felczak said. “We didn’t expect to win as easily as we did tonight. They have some good players. Number 23 (DJ Herbert) and Number 24 (Brycen Holmes) were good running backs. Our defense did a good job of shutting them down and shooting the gaps they were creating.”
