Attention readers: The Herald is looking for a few good columnists

Published: October 28th, 2009 06:00 AM

If you have an interest in public affairs, daily musings or your community and think you might have a flair for writing, The Herald has a space for you.

Beginning soon, The Herald will form its panel of four or five volunteer guest columnists whose writing will appear on this page every week. Each guest columnist will write approximately one column per month for the next year.

We’ll be searching for a cross-section of writers who mirror the diversity of East Pierce County and the many communities we cover — Puyallup, South Hill, Bonney Lake, Lake Tapps, Sumner and Edgewood.

We’ll expect our panel of guest columnists to write about current events and to keep it as local as possible. We want fresh perspectives on issues relevant to all readers of The Herald. Some guest columns may tackle politics. Some may find local relevance in state, national or world events. Some may find unique wisdom in a personal experience or social trend that affects people in East Pierce County in some way.

We’ll be looking for writers with passion but not ax-grinding, who can communicate in a clear and interesting style.

If the idea of sharing your point of view with our readers interests you, here’s how to apply.

A Write two sample columns of about 500 words.

A Attach a cover letter telling us about yourself.

A Send your columns and letter to: Guest Columnists, The Herald, P.O. Box 517, Puyallup, WA, 98371-0170, or e-mail them to: editor@puyallupherald.com with “Guest Columnist” in the subject line.

We must receive your application by Friday, Nov. 13.
