Puyallup Goodwill store opening highlights youth

Goodwill will be holding a grand-opening ceremony for its new Puyallup store at 1200 Fourth St. N.W., beginning at 8:45 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 29.

Puyallup Mayor Don Malloy, Goodwill board president Bob Bruback and chief executive officer Terry Haynes will lead the ceremony. Walker High School student leaders will be on hand to serve doughnuts and help shoppers with carts. Several prize drawings and free giveaways will be available for customers attending the event.

Popular children’s author in Puyallup on Oct. 28

Peg Kehret, a popular children’s author, will be visiting the Children’s Bookshop and Teaching Supplies store from 3-6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The bookshop is located in the K-Mart plaza at 707 River Road, Puyallup. Kehret, an award-winning author, has written more than 50 children’s books. Her newest work, “Runaway Twin,” was released on Oct. 15 and will be available for purchase, including signed copies. For more information, call 253-445-4790.

YMCA Friends and Servants auction is Oct. 30

The public is invited to attend a fun and inspiring event designed to benefit the YMCA Friends and Servants program.

The 2009 Friends and Servants Auction and Dinner takes place from 6-9:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30, at The Puyallup Fair and Events Center, 110 Ninth Ave. S.W. in Puyallup.

There will be a three-course catered dinner, silent and live auctions, raffle prizes and inspirational stories from those who have benefited from Friends and Servants, a program for empowering trouble youth. Tickets cost $35 per person or $250 for a table of eight.

Main Street collaborating on Oct. 31 ‘Thriller’ dance

The Puyallup Main Street Association, in conjunction with Elite School of Dance, invites the entire community to take part in a performance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” dance to open up the Halloween festivities in downtown Puyallup.

The event will take place on the patio on the north side of the Pioneer Park Pavilion at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 31. A free instructional video of the dance can be downloaded from www.thrilltheworld.com for anyone who would like to learn the dance and join the fun.

Republicans’ club talking domestic partnerships

The Puyallup Valley Republican Women’s Club will hold its monthly meeting beginning at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 2, at the Denny’s restaurant located at 626 South Hill Park Drive in Puyallup.

The club’s featured speaker will be Dr. Sharon Quick, who will be discussing the medical and societal implications of domestic partnerships. For information, call 253-927-2950.

Puyallup food bank open house is Nov. 7

The Puyallup Valley Food Bank, located at 239 W. Stewart in Puyallup, will be hosting an open house event from 2-5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7. The public is welcome to attend and take part in tours, snacks and door prizes.

Anyone who is unable to attend but would like more information on helping neighbors in need can visit the food bank’s Web site at www.puyallupfoodbank.org. Puyallup observing Veterans’ Day on Nov. 8

On Sunday, Nov. 8, a Veterans’ Resource Fair will be held at noon at the Pioneer Park Pavilion, followed by Puyallup’s annual Veteran’s Day observance at 1 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Puyallup Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2224, the city of Puyallup and American Legion Post 67.

Santa parade applications now being accepted

The Puyallup Main Street Association is now accepting applications to participate in this year’s Hometown Santa Parade.

Applications can be downloaded from the Main Street Association’s Web site, www.puyallupmainstreet.com. The deadline is Friday, Nov. 6. The 2009 Hometown Santa Parade is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5. The parade runs down South Meridian from Main Street to Fifth Avenue Southwest. Non-profit, civic and youth organizations are encouraged to participate.

Karshner Museum hosting family day on Nov. 7

The Friends of the Karshner Museum present their monthly family day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7.

The museum is located at 309 Fourth St. N.E. in Puyallup. The November theme is “Study of Electricity and Magnetism,” and will feature several “mad scientists” as guests along with arts and crafts, storytelling and an artifact hunt.
