Every year in the thirty-plus years that the Rotary Club of Sumner has held their annual golf tournament, they have always chosen a cause to donate the proceeds to.
“It’s our largest fundraiser of the year,” Rotarian Dave Radcliffe said.
In the past, the club has used the tournament’s proceeds to help purchase the Sumner Food Bank building and give out scholarships to students. This year, amidst financial troubles at the 76-year-old Daffodil Festival, the Rotarians chose it as the fundraiser’s beneficiary.
The tournament, held at High Cedars Golf Course, will be held in a traditional scramble format. Businesses or individuals can be sponsors and sponsorship comes with at least one spot in the tournament. The tournament raised more than $25,000 in 2008 and Radcliffe hopes to raise at least that much again this year.
“It’s a tough economy for charities,” he said. “But the thought of (the Daffodil Festival) going away has inspired people to get active (in keeping it).”
Susan McGuire, the festival’s vice president of public relations, agreed.
“I think it’s just really heartwarming for the festival to have people from the community step forward to help,” she said, adding that in 2009, the festival was able to award $55,000 in scholarships to the princesses and queen. “If the festival goes away, the scholarships go away. It’s not just all about the parade, it’s about the ability to help the young women of Pierce County further their education.”
The golf tournament will be held starting at noon Thursday, June 18 at High Cedars Golf Course, 4604 149th Street Ct. E. in Orting. The cost is $95 per player for golf and the following dinner. For more information about playing or sponsorships, call 253-381-1368.
