Sumner to close off two truck routes

Bridge Street bridge, portion of 16th Street to be closed to long-haul truck traffic from the industrial area of Sumner

Published: July 18th, 2008 01:10 PM

The Sumner City Council will soon close off two portions of city roads to truck traffic.

The sections proposed include Bridge Street, west of Traffic Avenue, and 16th Street East between 136th Avenue East and 140th Avenue East.

City officials have been intending to close off the Bridge Street bridge to truck traffic for some time, said Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow. The bridge, also know as the Stuck River Bridge, has a load limit of 31 tons — most similar bridges can handle 35 tons.

In addition to the load limits, long-haul trucks have many alternate routes to take, said Public Works Director Bill Pugh.

“There’s really no reason to have to go across the bridge,” Pugh said of truck traffic.

The 16th Street section is to be closed off because of some safety issues at the railroad tracks, he said. The tracks are actually positioned higher than the road — an angle not necessarily gentle on long-haul trucks.

“It’s just not something we would want to encourage,” Pugh said. “Sixteenth Street is a very narrow street.”

The preferred route for trucks in the north Sumner industrial area is 24th Street East, he said.

To indicate the changes, the city plans to notify local businesses, he said. They’ll also post signs depicting a red circle and slash over a truck.

Councilman Matt Richardson noted the city should make sure the signs indicating no truck traffic are far enough back so truck drivers have fair warning.

“You’re already committed…once you see that sign,” Richardson said.

The council will vote on the code revisions at its next regular meeting July 21.
