Puyallup / Sumner Leadership Institute 2009: Seeking Candidates

Published: July 10th, 2008 12:58 PM

Political Season Starts at the Chamber of Commerce

Dino Rossi, the 2008 gubernatorial candidate, will be speaking at the Chamber’s monthly luncheon on Friday, July 11. This sold out event marks the beginning of an intense political season for the Chamber. One role that the Chamber plays is ensuring that the business climate in this community is one that continues to foster business growth. The Chamber works on behalf of its members to ensure that businesses are at the table when decisions are made about taxes, transportation, education and business regulations. We all benefit from an environment that supports business growth. Flourishing businesses can create jobs that allow us to support our families, foster the competition that results in better products and prices for us as consumers, and they can strengthen this community by being good corporate citizens that volunteer their time and make contributions that build our community.

On Sept. 12, Governor Chris Gregoire will be speaking at the Chamber monthly luncheon. In October, the Chamber will host a Candidates’ Forum which gives attendees a chance to hear the candidates for local positions, such as the County Executive, respond to questions and discuss their plans for this region. The Chamber also participates in a regional partnership with seven other chambers called the South Sound Chambers’ Legislative Coalition. This coalition works to identify shared issues that they can address together during the legislative session. Since all the participating chambers are in this valley, the shared issues include the safety of the levy system on our river, transportation and workforce education.

New art exhibit at Chamber

On July 3, two local artists opened their exhibition at the Chamber office, located at 323 N. Meridian. Blue Hesicx paints bright, layered, complex pieces featuring elements from legends and fantasy. She describes her work as “embellished matter of lyrical consequences.” In addition to the paintings, her collection includes two whimsical pieces: A table with watches and clocks called the “Times Table” and a chair embellished with symbols of summer.

The second artist is Gary Lappier, a photographer who originally hails from Sumner. His show at the Chamber focuses on trains which seems apropos for the location of the Chamber near the train tracks. His collection highlights both the beauty and function of the trains that run through our towns daily and also captures the nostalgia for days gone by that trains evoke.

Community members are invited to stop by the Chamber & Visitors’ Center anytime to see the new art show. Each Thursday, the Chamber hosts a coffee break from 9:00 – 10:00 am and everyone is invited to stop by for coffee, doughnuts and conversation.
