The Strikers of South Hill Little League punched their tickets to the mountaintop after a memorable performance at the Washington All-Stars Little League district tournament.
In the championship game, the Strikers registered a 5-2 victory against Chinook Little League’s all-start team out of Enumclaw on June 20 in Auburn. The Strikers will compete in the state tournament on July 19 at Everest Field in Kirkland.
Strikers coach Jim Kelley knew his team would make some noise at districts.
“We knew going in that we were going to be a good team,” Kelley said. “It was awesome to see the girls come together. Every girl on this team were the leaders of their individual teams this past spring. When we put this team together I told each of them they would have to accept their roles on the team because a lot of girls were coming off the bench that weren’t used to that. There was no in fighting with our group. Everyone accepted their roles. We came together in a short amount of time and performed.”
Kelley said his team practiced four days a week for three weeks before competing in the district tournament.
“We practiced a lot so everyone got used to playing together because they’d never played together before,” Kelley said. “I don’t think they felt the pressure too much until we got to the championship game. Once we got our nerves out of the way they were pretty excited and played well.”
Kelley and his squad are looking forward to the state tournament this July.
“We’re going to take the week of Fourth of July off from practice and get right back into it after that,” Kelley said. “We’ll practice two to three times a week. We’ll be ready for state.”
