Basketball enthusiasts hoop it up at Vikings summer camp

Puyallup Vikings boys basketball head coach Scott Campbell was in his favorite environment as sounds of basketballs were bouncing from every corner of the high school gymnasium.

Campbell and members of the Vikings high school basketball program put on a camp for boys basketball players between third grade and ninth grade from June 23 through 26.

“We have about 90 kids out here participating,” Campbell said. “We want to teach them the fundamentals and teach them how to play the right way. I think that’s really important. I hope each of these players out here develop a passion for basketball and fall in love with the game.”

Tyler Josephson, who will be a ninth grader at Kalles Junior High this fall, said he was impressed with the intensity of Campbell’s basketball camp.

“I think this has been a good camp. It’s a lot of fun but it’s a lot of work too. It’s a little harder than I thought it would be,” Josephson said. “I went to another camp in Puyallup last week and it wasn’t as hard as this one is.”

Josephson said Campbell’s camp is helping him perfect his stroke from the perimeter. Josephson is a 5’8” shooting guard.

“The camp is helping me with my shot a lot,” he said. “I think my ball handling is getting better too.”

Campbell said he hopes players will walk away from camp focusing on specific skill sets where they want to improve their individual skills.

“When a player leaves camp they can’t work on 35 different things,” Campbell said. “We try to get each of them to pinpoint three or four specific areas of their game they want to work on. If they’re able to do that their game will improve immensely.”

With the majority of the camp attendees residing from the Puyallup region, Campbell enjoys seeing current Vikings players and possible future Vikings teaming up together on the court.

“This camp is really about building a basketball family,” Campbell said. “Our players are acting as role models for the younger kids. It’s not only good for our program but it’s good for the entire community.”
