Spencer Ramos wasn’t going to be denied in his pursuit of two coveted track and field state titles.
Ramos, who is a sophomore at Cascade Christian, sprinted his way to first place finishes in the 110 high hurdles, registering a time of 15.59 and the 300 hurdles, clocking a 40.73 at the Class 1A Track and Field State Championships on May 24 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
As Ramos made his way up to the award stand following his victories he admitted chills were shivering throughout his body.
“I had no clue what that was going to feel like,” Ramos said. “I was speechless and shocked. Everything I had worked for came true. Everybody was coming up to me congratulating me. It was a great experience. I have to give all the glory to god.”
Ramos edged out Kings High School runner Sean Brugger by only .02 in the 110 high hurdles.
“I basically just beat him by a half of step,” Ramos said. “He was ahead at the beginning. It was kind of like the fox and the rabbit. I kept chasing and had to catch up to him and I did.”
In the 300 hurdles, Ramos finished .34 seconds ahead of second place finisher Austin Dean of Kings High School.
“I was in lane four and he was in lane five. When we came around the corner he was a little ahead of me. On the second to last hurdle he grazed the hurdle with his foot. That left me a chance to catch him. There was no pressure on me in the 300 hurdles because I’d already won the 110 hurdles. I just gave it everything I had and didn’t hold back. I was able to finish just ahead of him.”
Cascade Christian football head coach Randy Davis made the short drive to Tacoma to watch one of his fastest players compete against some of the best athletes in Washington.
“My football coach (Randy Davis) was there. He was just going crazy. He was really happy for me,” Ramos said. “I’m proud to represent Cascade Christian as a state champ. I’m proud to be part of this school.”
