Nicole Morrow’s fly ball to right field that landed in the Wilson’s right fielder’s mitt in the bottom of the seventh inning signaled an end to the Rogers Rams season.

Wilson defeated Rogers 7-4 in a loser-out game on May 24 at the Class 4A fastpitch state tournament at SERA Fields in Tacoma.

Wilson scored five runs in the top of the first inning, putting the Rams in a hole before they had a chance to come to the plate.

Wilson rode a wave of momentum from their earlier contest against Monroe, playing Rogers 20 minutes after defeating Monroe in a see-saw battle. Rogers hadn’t played in nearly four hours before they took the field against Wilson. The Rogers layoff and the Wilson energy played a role in the first inning.

“We warmed up four different times waiting for their (Wilson and Monroe) game to end,” Rogers coach Jacy Ramsey said. “They had the advantage but 7-4 is still a pretty close game.”

Ramsey said that despite losing their final two games after winning their first two, their season was a success.

“Our goal was to get to state and we did it,” Ramsey said. “I’m so proud of everyone of them. They never gave up and did a great job.”

Eastlake keeps rolling after taking early lead over Rams

The eventual 4A state champions flexed their proverbial muscle against the Rogers Rams in the semi-finals on May 24.

Eastlake scored one run in the first, second, third and fifth innings registering a 4-0 victory.

“We just couldn’t get the breaks. We hit the ball deep into the outfield more than a few times but they kept coming up with the plays in the field,” Ramsey said. “We had runners on base but couldn’t get them in.”

Ramsey admitted her team was rattled by a few questionable calls in the first inning.

“There was a play at the plate and play at second that were obvious outs but they were called safe,” Ramsey said. “Everyone in the stands could see it. It just didn’t go our way.”

Shortstop Jessica Brock said Eastlake’s performance in the first inning effected Rogers for the rest of the game.

“We shouldn’t have but we got our heads down after the first inning,” Brock said. “We never really picked it up from there when we needed to.”

Rams corral Tigers in quarterfinals contest

Rogers wasn’t intimidated by Stadium’s stellar 15-1 season record heading into the quarterfinals matchup on May 23.

The Rams scored four runs in the top of the third inning, propelling themselves to a 5-1 victory against Stadium to advance to the Class 4A semi-finals.

“We still have an opportunity to play for the championship. We’re still in it,” Ramsey said. “That’s exciting.”

Rogers first baseman Haylie Watson came through in the clutch going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

“It’s amazing that we’re here and that we’re doing this good. Stadium was the No. 1 seed from their district and we took them out today,” Watson said. “It’s an amazing feeling.”

Schaapveld stifles Marysville-Pilchuck

Rogers left hander Bobbi-Jo Schaapveld allowed just one run in seven innings of work in a 2-1 victory against Marysville-Pilchuck in the opening round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

Schaapveld came through at the plate in the top of the sixth, smashing a two-run double to left field, scoring Devin Larson and Meagan Lee giving the Rams a 2-1 lead they wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the game. At first the ball appeared to be sailing in the direction of Marysville’s left fielder but the wind caught it and it fell in fair territory.

“I was going up there just trying to be confident,” Schaapveld said. “Even if I didn’t get that hit I was comfortable my teammates would get it done. We’ve worked really hard to get here and we did it as a team.”
