Youthful Puyallup squad gains valuable experience against state powerhouse

A season to remember came to an end earlier than the Puyallup Vikings baseball team expected it to.

Snohomish dashed Puyallup’s dreams of advancing to the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state baseball tournament, registering a 9-3 victory in the first round against Puyallup on May 17 at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Puyallup coach Marc Wiese said Snohomish is one of the most powerful baseball programs he’s coached against in a long time.

“They are a very good team and have a shot at going deep into the state tournament. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do very well in their bracket,” Wiese said. “Snohomish is talented in all aspects of the game and has been to the state tournament before.”

Snohomish pounded out 14 hits in their 20th victory of the 2008 season.

After falling behind 4-0 early in the contest, Puyallup closed the gap trailing 5-3 after the first three innings.

“Andrew Barry got a triple but we couldn’t push him in. He got stranded on third base,” Wiese said. “We had guys on base in the fourth inning but didn’t get the timely hits when we needed it. We hit the ball very hard and swung the bat well. It was just right at people.”

Snohomish tacked on two runs in the fifth and seventh to put the game out of reach.

Despite seeing his teams’ season come to an end, Wiese is confident about the future of the program.

“We had opportunities but we didn’t play as good of baseball as we normally do,” Wiese said. “Our guys obviously expected us to play better than we did. We’re a young team. They were bigger, stronger and just were a physically more mature than us. For us to get to their level we need to work on those aspects in the future. We have the talent and we’ll get there.”

Puyallup’s Tyler Peterson recorded 2 RBI in the loss. Barry was the Vikings’ leading hitter going 3-for-4.
