Sometimes fate works in mysterious ways when it comes to track and field.
Prior to the 2008 spring season, Cascade Christian sophomore Spencer Ramos never had participated in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Despite his inexperience, Spencer has cracked Washington’s top five in times in both events in the Class 1A division. Spencer has clocked a 41.2 in the 300 hurdles and a 16.1 in the 110 hurdles thus far this season.
Cougars head coach Josh Hoff expects Spencer to make some noise at the Class 1A track and field state tournament at Mount Tahoma High School this weekend.
“He’s such a fast learner. He has quick steps,” Hoff said. “It’s pretty incredible for him considering this is his first year in the hurdles.
Recently, I had an opportunity to sit down with Spencer asking a him a few questions about his life outside of track and field.
Shaun Scott: What is your favorite movie of all time?
Spencer Ramos: My favorite movie is “Band of Brothers.” It just shows how a person can keep their values even though they’re in a war.
SS: What is your favorite restaurant in Puyallup?
SR: Ruby Tuesdays. They have some really good shrimp.
SS: Where do you see yourself in five years?
SR: I want to be in seminary Bible college. I might go to Fuller Bible College in California. That’s where my dad went.
SS: Who do you want to win the National Basketball Association Championship?
SR: The Lakers. Kobe (Bryant) needs to win one. He deserves it.
SS: If you could pick one person to go to dinner with, who would it be?
SR: Peyton Manning. He’s a Super Bowl champion and his younger brother is a Super Bowl champion. He looks like he’s been pretty successful in life and in sports.
SS: Who was your idol growing up?
SR: My dad because of the example he’s set for me. The way he’s lived his life. He’s been through the hard and good times and come out of it great.
SS: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received and from whom?
SR: I can’t remember who it was from but I know the best advice I’ve received is, “humble is teachable.”
