The Emerald Ridge Jaguars soccer squad continued its ascent to the top of the SPSL league with a convincing win against a rival.
The Jaguars (5-2 overall) completed a 3-0 victory against the Rogers Rams (1-6 overall) on Oct. 2 at Sparks Stadium. In 2007, Rogers and Emerald Ridge played each other twice with no one coming out on top. Both games ended in ties.
Kaila Brannan, 10th minute, Lindsay Hicker, 57th minute, and Kayla Stueckle, 68th minute, found the back of the net for the Jaguars in the win against their biggest rivals. Junior Audrey Sullivan and Stueckle chipped in one assist apiece. Emerald Ridge goalie Emily Bond recorded her third shutout of the season.
“We didn’t play our best soccer but we were still able to come away with the win,” Emerald Ridge head coach Dan Stueckle said. “That shows the character of a good team.”
When Emerald Ridge and Rogers play one another it’s always a battle, Stueckle said.
“Both of us our on South Hill. It’s just two schools going after one another,” he said. “This year we have a pretty strong team. A lot of times teams talk about how they are rebuilding. This year we’re reloading.”
Rogers Rams head coach Moe Orcutt agreed with Stueckle’s assessment regarding his squad.
“I think Emerald Ridge is as good as any team out there right now,” Orcutt said. “They play a good style of soccer. If you’re going to lose, you want to lose to a good team. Emerald Ridge is a good team.”
Despite coming up short, Orcutt said his team gave it everything they had.
“We gave it 100-percent effort the whole game. That’s all you can ask for as a coach,” he said. “Tomorrow is a new day. We’re going to get up tomorrow and keep going.”
