Beyond the Athlete: Fenton is going to the next level in the Northwest

Published: August 21st, 2008 03:22 PM

Before Sumner Spartans girls soccer forward Amber Fenton steps on the field this fall, she can revel in the comfort that she already knows where she will playing soccer during her freshman year of college.

Fenton, who was the leading goal scorer in the SPSL league last fall, will continue her soccer career at Portland State University in 2009. She is receiving a combination of an athletic and academic scholarship.

“It’s really exciting. Now I don’t have to worry about where I will be playing after high school,” Fenton said. “I’m going to go out my senior year and have a lot of fun.”

Ever since Fenton was a toddler, she’s been a big fan of soccer.

“I’ve played soccer since I was 3 years old,” she said. “I’ve played for such a long time that I just know where the goal is at. I’m pretty fast and I like juking defenders on my way to the goal.”

Recently, I had an opportunity to ask Fenton questions about her life outside of soccer.

Shaun Scott: What is your favorite restaurant in Sumner?

Amber Fenton: Modoo Teriyaki. I just love their food.

SS: Who do you want to be the next president of the United States?

AF: I don’t really like either one of the candidates that are running.

SS: Where do you see yourself in five years?

AF: Still in college and finishing up my Master’s Degree. I want to go into a medical or veterinary field. Also, I’m hoping that I’m playing soccer in the women’s national pool by then.

SS: What is your biggest pet peeve?

AF: I have really good hearing so I would say it’s clicking taps or sounds. Especially when someone is tapping a pencil. That really bugs me.

SS: What is your favorite movie of all time?

AF: Lion King. I named one of my dogs after the movie and one day I want to have a pet lion.

SS: Who was your idol growing up?

AF: My dad. He’s always pushed me along the way to do better in academics and athletics. He’s does everything he can do for me. He’s taught me to never give up. After a soccer game, he will always tell me what I need to do to get better. He pushes me pretty hard.

SS: Who is your favorite athlete of all time?

AF: Mia Hamm (famous soccer player). She never gave up anything. She was great for the game of soccer. Everyone knows her name. Before she came a long women’s soccer wasn’t that popular. She’s brought up the game a lot since she started playing.
