Rams soccerballers hosting fourth annual golf tourney

A large contingent of golfers expected to hit the links at Lipoma Firs Golf Course on South Hill

For the fourth year in a row, Rogers Rams boys soccer head coach JR Farias will see a troupe of players from his soccer program volunteering their time and effort at the fourth annual Rams soccer teams’ golf fundraiser tournament slated for Aug. 23 at Lipoma Firs Golf Course on South Hill.

Tee-off on the 18-hole course is set to begin at 2 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Rogers Rams boys soccer program.

“Ever since I took the head coaching position, we’ve had this tournament for the community,” Farias said. “We used to do a joint tournament with my dad’s team (Emerald Ridge Jaguars girls basketball) but since my dad (Greg Farias) retired from coaching last year, it will just be the Rogers Rams soccer team this year.”

Farias expects to see a large contingent of golfers hitting the links for this Saturday’s festivities.

“So far we already got 48 players signed up. Each group is going out there in teams of four,” Farias said. “We’re expecting some more teams to register. This already will be the biggest tournament we’ve had since we started it four years ago.”

The tournament is open to the public and is also a reunion of sorts for Rams soccer players from the past and the present.

“We always have a lot of ex-players out here,” Farias said. “It’s a fun time where some of the guys from prior teams get to meet our current players.”

Farias said the tourney gives the public a unique opportunity to interact with players from the Rams soccer program off of the field.

“They get to see our players in a different kind of light than they see on the field,” Farias said. “It’s nice to have members of our program out there interacting with the community. We have a good group of guys who do the right thing on the field and off of the field.”
