Viking/Ram golf tourney draws a gigantic crowd

A record amount of golfers hit the links at High Cedars Golf Course for a good cause

Repeat champions and a hole-in-one will most certainly stand out in the minds of a record contingent of 150 golfers at the Viking/Ram 15th annual golf tournament on Aug. 2 at High Cedars Golf Course in Orting.

Matt Ducatt sunk a hole-in-one on the eighth hole and the fivesome consisting of Mark Howard, Rob Smith, Doug Wisness, Justin Wisness and John Duthie took the tournament championship shooting a combined 19 under par.

“It’s wonderful to have back-to-back winners,” Sparks said. “To have the same five golfers enter the tournament and come out on top is amazing. They all came back and none of them pulled out beforehand. To have the same five win it that did the year before is pretty amazing.”

A group finishing with a total of 18 under par, just one stroke behind the winning fivesome, consisted of Greg Legas, Thomas Smukalla, Jeff Hilvendeger, Robert Gregory and Kyle Thompson.

The highlight of the festivities was when Ducatt nailed a hole in one on the eighth hole.

“The great thing about it is that a lot of people saw it when it happened,” Sparks said. “A group from Valley Bank saw the ball go in the hole. Matt was pretty thrilled with his hole in one.”

Sparks said the weather conditions at the tournament turned out better than he expected them to.

“The weather was very agreeable. It was about 70 degrees. It wasn’t too hot like the days before and after the tournament. If the temperatures climb into the 80s it can wear golfers down,” Sparks said. “The numbers (attendance) were up and everyone had a good time.”
