Tungsvik competes in top tourney

Local lacrosse star travels to Baltimore, Maryland to compete against fierce opponents on grand stage

JT Tungsvik’s lacrosse squad dubbed “Team Washington” showed just how strong of a team they were at the Champ Camp lacrosse tournament from July 24 to 27 in Baltimore, MD.

Tungsvik, who graduated from Emerald Ridge this past spring, saw his team compile an 8-1 overall record, earning third place overall out of 76 teams in attendance. The team is comprised of 20 individuals from Bainbridge Island, Mercer Island, Issaquah, Seattle and Puyallup. In 2007, they earned fourth place at the Champ Camp tournament.

Tungsvik admitted the caliber of play on the West Coast pales in comparison to the kind of competition the East Coast offers.

“Every team was good. Lacrosse is a big deal out there,” Tungsvik said. “We kind of knew what to expect from the year before. We went into the tournament with a lot of confidence.”

Unfortunately for team Washington, they lost their semi-final game 7-5, preventing them from acquiring a berth in the championship game.

“It was tough. We wanted to be in the finals but we couldn’t quite get there,” Tungsvik said. “We lost that game in the final four minutes.”

This fall, Tungsvik will attend the University of Arizona where he plans on continuing his lacrosse career.

“They don’t have an NCAA team down there but they have a club team I will be playing on,” he said. “I thought about going to WSU (Washington State University) and CWU (Central Washington University) and a college in Wisconsin but I decided that Arizona would be the best fit for me. I’m going to play lacrosse and pursue a degree in Criminal Justice.
