Investco to stay in Sumner

Investco Financial Corporation’s plans for a $20 million mixed-use development on Sumner’s Main Street are part of a welcome effort to revitalize the east end of the town, according to Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow.

The plans include a three-story development on the corner of Main Street and Graham Avenue, east of the existing Fred Meyer retail mall. The project calls for approximately 24,000 square feet of retail space and 52,000 square feet of office space. It will also serve as Investco’s new headquarters office, which is currently on Puyallup Street in the industrial area of town.

The project has been tentatively named Washington Market, said Investco President Martin Waiss. It will consist of two buildings connected by an enclosed second-floor skywalk.

Key features include a rooftop garden, a conference facility on the third floor and a marquee corner with 6,000 square feet of space for two restaurants, Waiss said. Outdoor seating in an open plaza between the two buildings will serve as a gathering space for visitors, shoppers and employees.

Like the Fred Meyer development, Investco plans to place storefronts adjacent to the street and have the parking in back, Waiss said. It avoids a sea of parking spaces and it fits in with Sumner’s mission to have a pedestrian-friendly town.

“We wanted to help meet (Sumner’s) planning vision,” Waiss said.

And Mayor Enslow said he is more than happy to have Investco remain in Sumner.

“I’m just delighted,” Enslow said. “It will be a welcome addition to the east part of Sumner.”

Though the east end of Main Street was neglected in the past, hometown companies like Investco are working hard to give residents and visitors something nice to look at, and even better, something that fits into a pedestrian-friendly feel, Enslow said.

The existing strip mall will be demolished for the project, Waiss said. Investco has not yet marketed for additional tenants aside from Investco itself.

Investco also owns Washington Court, made up of single family residences, town homes and a mixed-use building. It’s located close to Washington Market’s future location.
